Celebrating
Dual Recovery
Using
Medallions, Key chains, and Recovery Chips to celebrate significant dual recovery dates
At this time, Dual
Recovery Anonymous offers undated bronze medallions, undated wooden chips,
and dated wooden recovery chips in 30 - 60- 90 day - 6 month, and 9 month
increments.
How they are used?
Each Group makes a determination of how the chips will be used for their group, so the method will vary. Dual Recovery Anonymous believes each Group ought to decide how it will handle issues of commemorating significant recovery dates and goals through the taking of an Informed Group Conscience. Some Groups use the wooden chips as a gift for new members--a reminder of dual recovery to carry with them as they start their journey in
recovery. Some Groups use them for 30, 60, or 90 days in the program, and some for clean/sober time. Many Treatment Centers and Service Providers give the undated chips or medallions to their clients after they have attended their first In-house DRA Educational or Support Session or near the end of their inpatient stay.
On the personal
level, individuals are free to decide for themselves how best to use the
chips and medallions. Many members carry a DRA recovery chip or medallion
with them at all times. This can remind them of their commitment to dual
recovery and the support of the DRA Fellowship wherever they go. Some
sponsors like to give a Bronze DRA Recovery Medallion to those they are
helping in dual recovery after a year in the program or after their 5th
Step or some other significant recovery event.
Some issues in dual
recovery are more complex for certain individuals and easier for others.
This is because there is no single type of dual diagnosis. There are
numerous forms of psychiatric illness, and chemical dependency patterns of
alcohol or drug abuse also vary. Despite our best recovery efforts,
psychiatric symptoms may flare up. Frequently, finding the right
medications and stabilizing on the correct levels is also a variable. As a
result, the dynamics involved in each person's recovery from their
no-fault illnesses can vary widely.
Long-term sobriety
and clean time from chemical dependency may not always be the most
accurate measure of a member’s willingness and efforts in working their
personal program of dual recovery. Yet, celebrating and acknowledging
recovery milestones can offer believable hope to everyone. We believe that
dual recovery begins at the point where each member starts empowering
their personal recovery process. It does not need to end with a flare-up
of symptoms or a resulting lapse in abstinence. We can learn from these
situations and continue to grow and heal one day at a time.
